Treat a phone migration as several separate jobs: copy ordinary data, re-establish accounts, move the mobile line and verify security access before erasing the old device.
What usually transfers and what may not
| Usually transferable | Requires a separate check |
|---|---|
| Contacts, calendars, many photos and basic settings | Authenticator apps and backup codes |
| Many apps or app download history | Banking-app registration and payment approvals |
| Some messages and call history | eSIM transfer and number-porting status |
| Saved Wi‑Fi details in supported transfers | Locally stored files, downloads and specialist app databases |
Choose the transfer route
- Same platform: use Apple Quick Start or Android setup transfer where possible.
- Android to iPhone: use Move to iOS during iPhone setup.
- iPhone to Android: follow the new Android device’s setup and use a cable when available.
- No reliable Wi‑Fi: prefer a direct cable transfer or a local computer backup rather than using a large mobile-data allowance.
Prepare before the first copy
- Charge both phones and install practical system updates.
- Confirm the old device unlock code and account passwords.
- Back up the old phone and check the backup time.
- Keep the SIM/eSIM active and preserve access to the old number.
- List banking, password-manager and authenticator apps that need separate recovery.
Verify before wiping
Open a sample from every important category: a recent photo, an old message, a contact, a calendar event, a downloaded file and a password-manager entry. Then test calls, SMS, mobile data and sign-in to high-value accounts. A setup screen saying “complete” is not proof that every app’s private data moved.
Plan migration as separate data streams
“Transfer everything” is not one operation. Device settings, photos, messages, passwords, SIM/eSIM, authenticator secrets and banking registration may use different tools and complete at different times.
- Create a short inventory of data stored locally, in the main cloud account and inside individual apps.
- Choose the official platform transfer for the broad copy, then list exceptions that need separate handling.
- Keep the old phone charged, connected and unchanged until the acceptance test is complete.
- Record which number and account should be primary on the new phone before activating services.
A successful migration ends when the user can perform essential tasks independently—not when a progress bar reaches 100%.
Choose the safest setup path

When this hub has done its job
The new phone should pass category-by-category checks while the old phone and its security methods remain available until nothing essential is missing.
