Use the transfer flow during initial Android setup and prefer a compatible cable when offered; then verify account access and app-specific data rather than assuming the word “copied” means everything moved.

Prepare both devices

  • Charge both phones.
  • Know the old screen lock and Google Account password.
  • Create a current Android backup.
  • Update important apps, especially banking and authenticator apps.
  • Keep the old phone and mobile line working.

Copy during setup

  1. Turn on the new Android phone and begin setup.
  2. When asked, choose to copy apps and data.
  3. Connect the phones with a compatible cable, or use the supported wireless method.
  4. Unlock the old phone and approve the connection.
  5. Choose the data categories to copy and leave both devices connected until the main stage finishes.

Manufacturer differences

Pixel, Samsung and other Android manufacturers may add their own migration tool. Use the method presented during the new phone’s setup rather than installing an unknown third-party “phone clone” app. Work-managed devices and some protected app data may not transfer.

Verify before resetting the old phone

  • calls, SMS and mobile data;
  • Google Account sync;
  • photos and local downloads;
  • calendar and contacts;
  • password manager;
  • authenticator codes and backup methods;
  • banking and payment approvals.

Treat Android setup as the start, not the end, of migration

Use the official Android setup flow while the old phone is still available. A cable is often the most predictable route, but the exact options depend on the manufacturer and the source platform.

  • Copy the broad device data during initial setup where possible.
  • Confirm the correct Google Account and wait for apps and media to finish downloading.
  • Handle SIM/eSIM, messaging, authenticator, banking and work-profile access separately.
  • Check the manufacturer’s transfer tool only for categories not covered by standard Android setup.

Before resetting the old device, make a normal call, receive an SMS, use mobile data, open recent and old photos and sign in to every account that would be difficult to recover.
