Use Quick Start when the old iPhone is available, but make a recent backup first and keep the old device untouched until the new iPhone has passed a real verification checklist.

Before you start

  • Charge both iPhones and connect them to power if possible.
  • Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone.
  • Check that you know the old passcode and Apple Account password.
  • Run an iCloud or encrypted computer backup.
  • Keep the old SIM/eSIM and old phone available.

Use Quick Start

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and place it beside the old one.
  2. Follow the Quick Start prompt and authenticate on the old iPhone.
  3. Connect the new iPhone to Wi‑Fi or mobile service.
  4. Choose direct transfer or restore from iCloud, depending on the prompt and your circumstances.
  5. Leave both devices near each other and powered until the transfer stage finishes.

Items that deserve a separate check

  • eSIM activation and the correct outgoing number;
  • banking apps and payment cards;
  • authenticator apps, passkeys and trusted numbers;
  • WhatsApp or other app-specific backups;
  • downloaded files, offline maps and locally stored music.

Verify the result

Make an ordinary call, receive an SMS, use mobile data, open recent and older photos, check messages, test email and sign in to critical accounts. Apps may continue downloading after the main transfer. Do not erase or trade in the old iPhone until the new device has worked normally for at least one complete verification session.

Keep the old iPhone available through the full acceptance test

Quick Start can move a large part of the device setup, but eSIM, secure apps, authenticator access and some downloaded media still require separate confirmation.

  • Update both devices and connect them to power before starting.
  • Choose direct transfer, iCloud restore or computer restore according to the available backup and connection.
  • Wait for background downloads and photo synchronisation to finish.
  • Check the Apple Account, trusted numbers, payment cards, watches and Find My state.

Do not erase the source iPhone when the new one first reaches the Home screen. Test calls, SMS, data, banking, messages, password access and several old photos first.
