The safe order is backup, transfer, verification, account removal and only then factory reset. A reset is the final step, not the whole preparation process.

Before erasing

  1. Back up and verify photos, files, messages and app-specific data.
  2. Transfer SIM/eSIM and test calls, SMS and mobile data on the replacement.
  3. Move authenticator apps, passkeys and banking access.
  4. Unpair watches and accessories.
  5. Sign out of work, Apple/Google and password-manager accounts as instructed.

Remove protections correctly

On iPhone, follow Apple’s handover procedure so Find My and Activation Lock are removed for the legitimate buyer. On Android, remove Google and manufacturer accounts before resetting to avoid Factory Reset Protection blocking the next owner.

Reset and inspect

  • Use the settings menu, not manual file deletion.
  • Remove physical SIM and memory card.
  • Confirm the welcome/setup screen appears.
  • Do not give the buyer your passcode or account password.
  • Retain proof of sale and the device serial or IMEI separately.

If the phone is damaged

Do not hand over a device that still contains accessible data simply because the screen is broken. Use official remote erase where possible or a reputable repair/recycling route with a documented data policy.

Keep a handover record

A simple record protects both seller and buyer and confirms that critical services moved before the device was erased.

  • Record IMEI or serial number, date, buyer or platform and condition.
  • Confirm mobile number, 2FA, banking and backups work on the replacement.
  • Retain the final setup-screen photograph and proof of payment or transfer.
