Remove an iPhone from Find My only for a legitimate handover after it has been erased; never remove a stolen device merely because someone asks.

For a sale or gift

  1. Back up and transfer all data.
  2. Erase the iPhone using Apple’s supported process.
  3. Ensure the mobile line has moved.
  4. Use Find My or the Apple Account device list to remove the erased device when the handover requires it.

Why timing matters

Find My enables Activation Lock. Removing a missing or stolen device can make it easier for another person to activate and resell. Keep it attached to the account while it remains lost.

Verify

  • The buyer sees the normal setup screen.
  • Your payment cards and account are no longer available on that phone.
  • The replacement iPhone remains in Find My.
  • You have not removed the wrong device with a similar name.

If the phone is offline

An erase or removal instruction may not complete until the device reconnects. Read the current status before assuming the command succeeded.

Distinguish sale from theft

Removal is appropriate for a completed sale or trade-in, but not for a stolen iPhone that should remain protected by Activation Lock.

  • For a sale, erase the device and confirm it no longer asks for the previous owner.
  • For theft, mark it lost and keep it in Find My even after remote erase.
  • Record the serial number, IMEI and handover evidence before removal.
