This hub covers the complete handover sequence: verified backup, mobile-line transfer, account removal, factory reset and proof that the next owner cannot access your data.
The correct order
- Back up and verify important data.
- Transfer SIM/eSIM, 2FA and banking access.
- Unpair watches and remove authorised work management.
- Sign out and remove account protection using official steps.
- Factory-reset through Settings.
- Confirm the welcome screen and remove SIM or memory card.
Different situations need different choices
| Situation | Priority |
|---|---|
| Selling or gifting | Release activation protection for the legitimate owner |
| Phone is stolen | Keep Find My or Find Hub protection active |
| Phone is broken | Protect accounts and use remote erase or professional handling |
| Recycling | Secure data and use an electrical-waste route |
Device and service are separate
Removing a SIM or erasing a phone does not necessarily cancel the mobile contract, device finance, insurance or cloud subscription. Handle each account separately and keep final bills, porting confirmation and proof of handover.
Final verification
- The replacement receives calls, SMS and data.
- Authenticator and banking access work elsewhere.
- No personal SIM, memory card or paired watch remains.
- The setup screen does not demand the former owner’s account during a legitimate transfer.
Sale, gift and recycling are not the same
| Destination | Additional check |
|---|---|
| Private buyer | Proof of ownership, condition and activation status |
| Family member | Separate account, recovery details and privacy boundary |
| Trade-in | Programme instructions, valuation evidence and shipping tracking |
| Recycler | Data-handling and damaged-battery process |
A phone can remain linked outside the handset
Even after a factory reset, the old device may still appear in trusted-device lists, payment wallets, password managers, work-management portals and insurer records. Review those systems after the reset. Conversely, do not remove a stolen device from theft protection merely to tidy an account list.
Avoid handing over hidden liabilities
- Disclose whether the phone is still under device finance.
- Resolve an outstanding network lock on an older or imported phone.
- Remove cases and accessories only after checking for SIM or memory cards.
- Keep postage tracking and photographs when sending a trade-in.
Separate reversible preparation from final handover
Complete and verify every reversible step before the reset, because account removal and erasure can make recovery much harder.
- Move data, mobile service, 2FA and banking access first.
- Unpair watches and remove payment cards and work-management profiles.
- Reset only after the replacement device works and then confirm the welcome screen and absence of owner lock.
Choose the safest setup path
Use this section to transfer data and security methods first, remove the correct owner locks and only then erase or recycle the device.

When this hub has done its job
The old owner’s data and locks should be removed, the recipient should reach the normal welcome screen, and no mobile contract or account should be cancelled by accident.
