Erase an iPhone only after its data, eSIM decision and account handover have been checked.
Prepare first
- Verify a recent backup.
- Move authenticator and banking access.
- Unpair Apple Watch where applicable.
- Transfer the mobile line.
- Know the Apple Account password and recovery method.
Use the supported erase route
Open Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings. Read any eSIM choice carefully: keeping or deleting an eSIM has different consequences, and deleting it may require the network to issue a replacement.
For a sale or gift
Follow Apple’s handover guidance so Find My and Activation Lock are removed for the new owner. Do not merely delete photos and apps manually, because synced data and account access can remain.
Verify
- The phone restarts at the Hello screen.
- It no longer appears as requiring your account for activation when legitimately transferred.
- The old SIM or memory card is not inside.
- Your data and services work on the replacement phone.
Remove owner protections in the correct order
Erasing an iPhone for sale should follow Apple’s handover process so that Find My and Activation Lock are removed for the legitimate next owner.
- Verify iCloud or computer backup and app-specific data.
- Transfer eSIM and trusted-number access first.
- After erasing, confirm the Hello screen and keep proof of sale and device identifiers separately.
