A cable is often the most reliable route for a large phone migration, but only when the cable supports data, the connector or adapter is correct and both devices remain unlocked and powered.

Choose the right cable

A charging-only cable can supply power without carrying data. Use the cable supplied with one of the devices or a reputable data cable. USB‑C to USB‑C is common on recent phones; older combinations may require a manufacturer-approved adapter.

Safe transfer sequence

  1. Back up the source phone.
  2. Start the new phone’s setup and choose the option to copy data.
  3. Connect the devices only when the setup flow asks.
  4. Unlock the old phone and approve any trust or data-access prompt.
  5. Choose the categories to copy.
  6. Keep both phones still, charged and connected until the setup reports completion.

What a cable does not solve

  • It does not automatically transfer every app’s private database.
  • It does not move an eSIM unless the platform and operator support a separate transfer.
  • It does not replace backup codes or account recovery.
  • It cannot copy data that the source phone cannot decrypt or access.

If the phones do not connect

Try another known data cable, remove a passive hub, cleanly reconnect the plugs and restart both phones. Do not force a damaged connector. If the source port is unreliable, use a supported wireless transfer or restore from a verified backup.

Check the cable, connector and power before blaming the transfer tool

A cable can charge correctly yet fail to carry data. Use a known data-capable cable, keep both phones powered and avoid moving the connectors during a long transfer.

  • Update both devices and unlock them before connecting.
  • Approve trust or data-access prompts on the correct phone.
  • Choose the source and destination carefully, especially when using an adapter.
  • If the transfer stops, record the stage and remaining storage before restarting.

After completion, compare representative items rather than relying on the transferred-item count. Messaging, secure apps, SIM/eSIM and cloud-only media may still need separate work.
