How to Transfer Contacts via SIM Card

Use account sync first when possible

Contacts stored in Google Contacts, iCloud or another account can synchronise with richer fields such as multiple numbers, email addresses, notes and photos. Check which account currently owns the contacts before exporting anything.

When SIM transfer can still help

• The old phone has no practical cloud access.
• You need a small emergency list of basic telephone numbers.
• Both phones use a physical SIM and support SIM contact import or export.

Safe sequence

1. Open the old phone’s Contacts settings and identify whether contacts are on the device, an account or the SIM.
2. Export only if the phone offers a clear SIM option.
3. Move the physical SIM to the new phone.
4. Use the new phone’s Contacts import function.
5. Check for missing surnames, duplicate entries and lost secondary numbers.
6. Move the imported contacts into the intended cloud account so they are not left only on the SIM.

Do not assume the SIM is a backup

A SIM can be replaced, deactivated during porting or lost with the phone. It is not an adequate backup for a full address book.

Use SIM transfer only for a basic emergency list

A SIM may hold a limited name-and-number record, but it is unsuitable for modern contact cards with email addresses, photographs, notes and multiple numbers. Prefer account sync or a standard contact export when possible.

• Check whether the old contacts are actually stored on the SIM before copying.
• Import once, then inspect for truncated names and duplicate entries.
• Move the imported contacts into the intended Apple, Google or other account.
• Compare a small list of family, work and emergency contacts before discarding the old phone.

Do not treat the SIM as an ongoing backup. It can be replaced, deactivated or lost, and it does not preserve the full information needed by most modern address books.
