Choose between direct transfer, cloud synchronisation and a computer copy based on where the original files are stored; seeing thumbnails on the new phone does not prove the originals are safely available.
Identify the current library
- Local camera files on the old phone;

- a computer or external drive.

Avoid duplicate and reduced-quality copies
Do not repeatedly export the same library through messaging apps, which may compress files and strip metadata. Before merging two cloud libraries, check whether automatic backup is already active on both devices.
Verify the result
- Open old and recent photos.
- Play several videos completely.
- Check dates and albums.
- Confirm whether originals are downloaded or cloud-only.
- Keep the old library or backup until the new one is independently verified.
Preserve originals, metadata and album meaning
A transfer that shows thumbnails may still use optimised copies or omit metadata. Decide whether you need original-resolution files, edited versions, Live Photos or motion photos, captions and album structure.
- Compare the total library size and date range before and after transfer.
- Open several older videos and high-resolution photographs on the destination.
- Check hidden, shared and recently deleted albums separately.
- Avoid enabling two competing photo-sync services until duplicate behaviour is understood.
Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable originals before merging libraries or deleting duplicates. Automated duplicate detection can select the wrong version when edits or metadata differ.
