How to Move Apps to a New Phone

What usually happens

The new phone receives a list of compatible apps and downloads current versions from the official store. Some settings and data may restore from a platform backup or the app’s own account. Apps removed from the store, incompatible with the new system or tied to an employer may not return.

Prepare critical apps

• Confirm the login email or username.
• Save recovery codes.
• Check whether the app has its own export or backup.
• Record any licence or subscription account.
• For banking and government apps, read the provider’s new-device procedure.

After migration

1. Let store downloads finish.
2. Open the most important apps first.
3. Sign in using the official app and verify notifications.
4. Check local projects, downloads and offline content.
5. Re-authorise biometrics and payment approvals only after confirming the account is genuine.

Do not copy untrusted installation files

Avoid random APK packages or “app cloning” utilities to recreate missing apps. Install from the official store or the organisation’s documented enterprise method.

Distinguish reinstalling an app from moving its private data

The app store can often reinstall previously obtained apps, but licences, saved files, secure tokens and local histories may not follow. Review important apps before the old phone is erased.

• Check that the app still exists for the new platform and operating-system version.
• Confirm the sign-in method, subscription owner and recovery route.
• Use the app’s own export, cloud sync or device-transfer instructions for private data.
• Expect banking, government, work and authenticator apps to require fresh device registration.

Open each critical app on the new phone and perform a harmless real task, such as viewing an old record or completing a test sign-in. An icon on the Home screen proves only that the app installed.
