Account Management — practical UK mobile guidance

Treat the phone, platform account, mobile number and individual apps as separate layers; signing out of one does not automatically close or transfer the others.

Four different actions

ActionWhat it affects
Remove an account from a phoneLocal access and synchronisation on that device
Sign out of an appThat app session only
Close an Apple/Google accountThe cloud account and associated services
Deactivate a phone numberThe mobile service with the network

Before changing ownership

  • Back up data.
  • Protect 2FA and recovery codes.
  • Confirm who owns the number and account.
  • Remove payment cards and app sessions.
  • Use the official factory-reset and Find My/Find Hub removal order.

Do not confuse removal with deletion

Removing a Google Account from Android or signing out of an Apple Account does not necessarily delete the cloud account. Conversely, deleting an account can permanently affect email, purchases, backups and recovery.

Verify afterwards

Check account device lists, Find My/Find Hub, mobile service, app sessions and the reset welcome screen before handing over a phone.

Use a simple ownership record

For each phone, record who owns the handset, mobile contract, number, Apple/Google account and important subscriptions. These may belong to different people, especially in families and workplaces.

Decide whether the goal is sign-out, removal, transfer or permanent deletion

These actions have different consequences. Removing an account from one phone usually leaves the online account active, while deleting the account can affect email, purchases, cloud data and recovery across every device.

  • Identify the legal and practical owner of the account and mobile number.
  • Back up data and preserve 2FA before changing account access.
  • Review linked watches, computers, browsers, payment cards and work profiles.
  • Verify the result remotely from another trusted device.

Use the least destructive action that achieves the goal. Permanent deletion should not be used as a shortcut for handing over or troubleshooting one phone.

When this hub has done its job

The intended account or number should be removed or closed while backups, recovery methods, purchases and the rights of any new owner remain intact.
