How to Set Up a Phone With a New Apple Account

For a new or erased iPhone

During setup, sign in with the new owner’s Apple Account or create one. Configure trusted numbers, Find My, backup and recovery before relying on the phone.

For an already used iPhone

1. Back up the current owner’s data.
2. Sign out through the official Apple Account flow.
3. Choose carefully whether local data should remain.
4. Prefer a full erase for a permanent change of owner.
5. Set up again with the new owner’s account.

Avoid mixed ownership

Contacts or photos left locally can merge into the new account. Apps installed under the old account may later request the old password for updates. A clean reset is usually clearer for a permanent handover.

Verify

• Find My shows the new owner.
• Backup completes under the new account.
• App Store purchases use the correct account.
• No old payment cards or messages remain.

Apps may belong to the old account

An app restored or left on the phone may request the previous owner’s Apple Account password for updates. Re-download essential apps under the new owner’s account instead of sharing credentials.

Avoid mixing the new owner’s data with the previous owner’s account

A new Apple Account should be created or signed in only after the phone is legitimately released from the previous owner and reaches a clean setup state.

• Confirm there is no Activation Lock or request for the old owner’s credentials.
• Use the new owner’s trusted number, recovery details and payment choices.
• Review iCloud sync categories before importing contacts or photos.
• Set up 2FA, backup and Find My under the new owner.

If important data belongs to the old account, export or transfer it deliberately before sign-out. Do not leave both people sharing one account as a permanent workaround.
