How to Remove an Apple Account from an iPhone

Before signing out

• Complete a current backup.
• Confirm the Apple Account password.
• Check which photos, contacts and files are synchronised.
• Move authenticator and banking access if the phone is changing owner.

Use the official sign-out flow

Open Settings, tap the account name, then Sign Out. Current versions may offer different choices about erasing the device or signing out without erasing. Read the on-screen summary carefully.

Find My and ownership

For a legitimate sale or gift, follow Apple’s full handover process so Find My and Activation Lock are removed at the right stage. Do not remove a stolen device from Find My.

Do not confuse sign-out and deletion

Signing out removes access from the iPhone; it does not delete the Apple Account itself.

If the password is unavailable

Use Apple’s official account-recovery process. Do not pay an unofficial “unlock” service or remove the device from Find My on instructions from a stranger.

Sign out only after preserving data and understanding Find My

The Apple ID is now called Apple Account. Signing out can remove synced data from the iPhone and may require the account password to turn off Find My.

• Create or verify a backup and app-specific recovery first.
• Decide whether any contacts, calendars or files should remain locally.
• Unpair watches and review payment cards when preparing a handover.
• Confirm the device no longer appears under the old owner after the intended reset.

For a stolen iPhone, do not remove it from Find My merely to tidy the account; doing so can remove Activation Lock. Handover and theft require different actions.
