Removing a Google Account from Android stops its local synchronisation and access on that phone; it does not normally delete the Google Account itself.

Before removal

  • Confirm the Google password and recovery route.
  • Back up local files and app-specific data.
  • Check contacts, photos and notes are in the intended account.
  • Move authenticator or passkey access if the phone is being retired.

Remove from Android

Open Settings and find Passwords & accounts, Users & accounts or Manage accounts. Select the Google Account and choose Remove account. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.

What may disappear locally

  • Gmail and account email
  • Synchronised contacts and calendars
  • Google Play identity
  • Some app data and backup access
  • Find Hub association after later reset or account changes

If giving the phone away

Remove all accounts and complete a factory reset. Confirm the setup welcome screen appears and the previous owner is not requested unexpectedly.

If account removal is blocked

A work profile, parental supervision, device policy or screen-lock requirement may prevent removal. Resolve the owner or administrator relationship rather than bypassing security controls.

Understand what disappears locally and what remains online

Removing the account from Android normally removes its synced email, contacts and settings from that device but does not delete the Google Account itself.

  • Back up local files and app data not stored in the account.
  • Check whether the account is required for device protection or a work profile.
  • Remove it through Settings rather than merely signing out of individual apps.
  • Review the Google Account device list afterwards.

For a sale or handover, complete the full ownership-removal and factory-reset process. Removing one Google Account is not a substitute for wiping all private data.
