Create the Google Account for the person who will own the phone and secure it before using it for backups, app purchases or account recovery.

Create it

Use the Android setup process or Google’s official account-creation page. Provide accurate age information, a controlled email address or Gmail name, a unique password and current recovery details.

Secure it

  • Add a recovery phone and email.
  • Enable two-step verification or passkeys where suitable.
  • Save backup codes outside the phone.
  • Review signed-in devices.

Children and work phones

Use Family Link for a child account. For an employer-owned device, follow the organisation’s managed-account process rather than mixing personal and work data.

Verify

Check Google Play, backup, contacts, Find Hub and recovery. A phone number used only once during setup is not a reliable long-term recovery plan unless it remains current.

Avoid future lockout

Do not make the phone itself the only place that receives recovery email, prompts and authenticator codes. Add an independent recovery route and test it while the account is new.

Create the account for the actual long-term owner

Use the user’s own name, recovery information and date of birth. A helper should not create the phone under a private helper account merely because setup is faster.

  • Choose a unique password and add a recovery email or number the owner can access.
  • Enable 2-Step Verification with an independent fallback.
  • Review sync categories, location and personalisation settings deliberately.
  • Record the recovery process without writing the password beside the phone passcode.

After setup, sign in through a browser and confirm the owner can recognise the account address and complete recovery with appropriate help.
