Deactivate a number through the mobile provider only after deciding whether it must be kept, ported or retained temporarily for account recovery.
Before closing the number
- List services using it for 2FA or recovery.
- Move banking and messaging registrations.
- Save voicemail or SMS that must be retained.
- Check the minimum term, final bill and device finance.
- Decide whether a PAC is needed to keep the number.
Contact the provider
Removing a SIM, deleting an eSIM or stopping use does not necessarily close the mobile account. Use the provider’s official cancellation, PAC or STAC process and obtain confirmation.
Allow for transition
Keep the old service active until critical accounts and the new number work. Number recycling means an abandoned number may later be assigned to another customer.
Verify closure
- Final bill received
- Direct Debit reviewed only after settlement
- SIM/eSIM inactive
- Online account status confirmed
- No remaining family or device-finance lines
Numbers can be security credentials
After closure, update every account that still lists the old number. Providers may recycle numbers, so leaving an old number as a recovery method can expose a future password reset to another person.
Audit every service that treats the number as identity
A cancelled number may later be recycled. Before deactivation, remove it from banking, email, social, messaging and recovery settings so a future holder cannot receive security messages intended for you.
- Transfer the number with a PAC if it must be kept.
- Update 2FA and recovery contacts before the SIM stops working.
- Download bills, voicemail or account records that may disappear.
- Confirm final charges, device finance and any linked lines.
Deleting the SIM or eSIM from a phone does not close the mobile account. Obtain written confirmation from the provider when the service itself is cancelled.
