How to Close a Mobile Account When Someone Dies — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

Use the provider’s dedicated bereavement process and decide whether the account should close, transfer or release the number before valuable access is lost.

Gather information

  • Account holder’s name and mobile number
  • Account or billing reference where available
  • Your contact details and relationship
  • Death-certificate information requested by the provider
  • Decision about closing, transferring or porting the number

Preserve what matters first

Where lawful and authorised, consider voicemail, contacts, messages, photos and accounts that depend on the number. Do not access private data merely because the handset is available.

Provider options differ

EE, O2, Vodafone and Three provide dedicated bereavement routes. Options can include closure, transfer of responsibility, PAYG conversion or moving the number, but documentation and device-finance treatment differ.

Record the outcome

  • Reference number
  • Final bill or balance
  • Number-transfer decision
  • Device-finance position
  • Date the SIM will stop working

Handle the number before closure where necessary

A mobile number may receive account-recovery messages or be known to family and services. Ask the provider about transfer or PAC options before closure; once disconnected, voicemail and number access may be unrecoverable.

Preserve the number and evidence until the family decides what is needed

Before closing the service, consider whether the number is needed for estate administration, account recovery or a final voicemail. Contact the provider’s bereavement team rather than using a normal cancellation route.

  • Confirm who is authorised to act and what evidence the provider requests.
  • Ask about transferring the number, closing it or moving it to another account.
  • Check device finance, other family lines and the final bill separately.
  • Save reference numbers and any important voicemail before disconnection.

Do not assume possession of the phone gives permission to read every account. Handle personal data proportionately and follow the provider’s documented process.
