Use the phone or photo service’s duplicate tool, review every group, and keep the best original rather than deleting by filename alone.
On iPhone
The Photos app can identify duplicates in supported versions. Merging keeps the highest-quality version and combines relevant metadata, while the discarded copies move to Recently Deleted. Review that folder before permanent removal.
On Android and Google Photos
Tools vary by phone and app. Use the manufacturer’s gallery or Google storage-management suggestions, and be cautious with third-party duplicate cleaners that request access to the whole library.
What may only look duplicated
- An edited version and its original.
- A lower-resolution messaging copy.
- Burst photographs.
- A photo saved from a shared album.
- The same image with different metadata.
Safe clean-up
Back up the library, merge small groups first, verify several albums, and delay emptying the bin. The space may not be reclaimed until Recently Deleted or Trash is cleared.
Prove that two files are genuine duplicates
Burst shots, edited copies and similar-looking images may be different. Review the proposed deletion set before accepting an automatic clean-up.
- Compare date, resolution and edit history.
- Keep the best original and any version with meaningful edits or metadata.
- Check Recently Deleted only after confirming that the retained copy opens from the intended library.
Review the result before emptying Recently Deleted
Automatic tools can make mistakes that remain recoverable only for a limited period.
- Open the retained copy at full resolution.
- Check albums, favourites and shared-library status.
- Wait until backup and synchronisation complete before permanently clearing the deleted folder.
