Use the built-in battery report to distinguish deliberate screen use from unexpected background activity.
Read the report correctly
- Choose a representative 24-hour or multi-day view.
- Compare battery percentage with screen-on and background time.
- Tap an app for detail where the system allows it.
- Check whether the activity matches what you remember doing.
Common false alarms
- A navigation app is expected to use substantial power during a journey.
- A video app may lead the list after an hour of streaming.
- An app showing 40% used 40% of the power consumed, not necessarily 40 percentage points of the whole battery.
Signs worth investigating
- Long background time with little intentional use.
- Location activity after the journey ended.
- Drain beginning immediately after an app update.
- Heat while the phone is idle.
Safe response
Restrict one app, update it or temporarily remove it, then compare a similar day. Do not disable security, accessibility or messaging functions without checking the consequences.
Interpret percentages in context
An app can top the battery list because you deliberately used it for hours. The useful question is whether its activity is expected.
- Compare foreground time with background time.
- Look for activity while the phone was idle or in a different location.
- Check the same period after an update or setting change before deciding to remove the app.
