Cloud storage can reduce local use, but only after uploads are complete and the recovery path has been tested.
Choose the right behaviour
| Mode | What happens |
|---|---|
| Synchronise | Changes, including deletion, may appear on every device |
| Optimise storage | Smaller local versions may replace originals |
| Manual archive | You copy files, verify them, then decide what to remove locally |
Safe process
- Confirm the account and available cloud space.
- Upload while on reliable Wi-Fi and power.
- Wait for all pending items to complete.
- Open samples from another device or browser.
- Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files.
- Only then remove local originals or enable optimisation.
Watch for hidden gaps
- Shared albums may not preserve original quality.
- App-specific files may not be included.
- A cancelled subscription can reduce storage allowance.
- Account recovery may depend on the same lost phone.
Verify after cleaning
Restart the phone, check available space, and open recent and old files. Do not empty Recently Deleted until you are confident the cloud copy is usable.
Choose between sync, optimisation and archive
Cloud services do not all remove local data in the same way. Decide whether you want synchronisation, an optimised local copy or a separate archive.
- Read the service’s deletion behaviour before enabling optimisation.
- Keep account recovery details outside the phone.
- Test access to a representative file while offline and from another device.
