Request a PAC from the old network, give it to the new provider and keep both services available until the number works fully on the new SIM or eSIM.
Get the PAC
For a single UK mobile number, text PAC to 65075 from the number being moved, or use the provider’s account/contact route. The response also includes important contract information. A PAC is normally valid for 30 days.
Prepare before submission
- Activate the new SIM/eSIM if instructed.
- Save the PAC and expiry date.
- Back up 2FA recovery codes.
- Keep the old phone and SIM available.
- Check that the name and account details are correct.
- Do not manually cancel the old service first.
Give it to the new provider
Submit the PAC through the new provider’s official form, app or support channel. Record the accepted date and intended port date. Ofcom’s normal requirement is completion within one working day unless a later date is agreed.
Verify the moved number
- Call the number from another network.
- Make an outgoing call and confirm the displayed number.
- Send and receive SMS.
- Test mobile data separately.
- Check voicemail and important account messages.
- Contact the new provider if service is split or the wrong number appears.
Protect accounts tied to the number
Most services continue to recognise the same telephone number after a successful port, but SMS can be disrupted during the change. Save recovery codes and avoid scheduling the port immediately before travel, a banking deadline or an important login.
After completion, verify several important services rather than requesting sensitive codes repeatedly during the transition.
Prove that the number moved in both directions
A port is complete only when the new SIM or eSIM shows the intended number and other networks can reach it. Test outgoing caller ID, incoming calls, outgoing SMS, incoming SMS and voicemail separately. Do not update banking or messaging services to a temporary activation number.
- Ask one contact on another network to call and text.
- Keep the old SIM until the new provider confirms routing is complete.
- Escalate split behaviour with exact times and examples rather than resetting the phone.
