Clear cache for a specific misbehaving app, not every app as a routine “clean-up” task.

Cache versus app data

ActionLikely effect
Clear cacheRemoves temporary files; sign-in and settings usually remain
Clear storage/dataResets the app and may remove sign-in, downloads and local content
UninstallRemoves the app and may remove data not synced elsewhere

Safe steps

  1. Open Settings, Apps and select the affected app.
  2. Open Storage & cache or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
  3. Choose Clear cache first.
  4. Reopen the app and test the original problem.

When cache clearing helps

  • A page or image is stale.
  • The app crashes after an update.
  • Temporary files have grown unusually large.
  • A download is stuck.

What it will not fix

Clearing cache does not repair a failing battery, poor mobile coverage or an account problem. Avoid third-party “cleaner” apps that request broad permissions or promise permanent speed gains.

Check whether cache is really the problem

Clearing cache is useful for a misbehaving app, but it is not a general storage strategy and should not be confused with clearing app data.

  • Record the app size and symptom before clearing cache.
  • Reopen the app and confirm that sign-in, downloads and offline content still behave as expected.
  • If storage immediately grows again, address the app’s downloads or data settings instead of repeating the same action.
