Fast drain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Separate battery wear from unusually high power use before changing settings or paying for a repair.
Start with the pattern
| Pattern | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Gradual decline over many months | Battery health or age |
| Sudden change after an update | Background indexing, an app update or a stuck process |
| Drain mainly in one building or on a train | Weak or changing mobile signal |
| Drain while the screen is off | Background activity, location or poor signal |
| Phone is hot while idle | A process, radio or hardware fault is active |
Check the largest consumers
- Open the built-in battery screen and compare screen-on time with background activity.
- Check whether one app has unusual background use, not merely a high percentage after heavy intentional use.
- Look at signal quality where the drain occurs; a weak radio connection can use substantial power.
- Restart once, update the system and apps, then observe a normal day before changing several settings at once.
When wear is the likely cause
A battery that has aged may show shorter runtime, unexpected shutdowns or reduced peak performance even when app use is normal. Use the manufacturer’s battery-health information where available. On phones without a reliable percentage, compare runtime and service diagnostics rather than installing an unknown “battery health” app.
Verify the diagnosis
- Change one factor at a time.
- Compare similar days, locations and usage.
- Do not factory-reset a phone merely because the battery drained quickly once.
- Seek service if the battery is swollen, the phone becomes unusually hot, or shutdowns continue.
Build evidence across one normal day
A useful diagnosis connects battery loss to time, place and activity. Avoid changing several settings before you know when the drain occurs.
- Record start and end percentage, screen time and the main apps used.
- Note weak-signal locations, navigation, hotspot use and camera activity.
- If the phone becomes hot while idle or shuts down unexpectedly, prioritise service diagnostics over further software tweaks.
