Use the automatic or recommended mode first; force 4G or 5G only for a specific reason and test the result.
Before changing the mode
Record the current setting and confirm that mobile data works. On a Dual-SIM phone, make sure you are changing the line used for data rather than the other SIM.
iPhone
Open Settings > Mobile Service/Mobile Data, select the relevant line if prompted, then open Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data. Available choices may include 5G Auto, 5G On and 4G/LTE. Apple recommends 5G Auto as the balanced default on supported devices.
Pixel and other Android phones
On Pixel, the path is commonly Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type. Samsung commonly uses Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Names vary, and some operators hide the control.
When forcing 4G is reasonable
- 5G repeatedly connects and drops in the same place.
- The phone becomes unusually warm or battery life falls during weak 5G coverage.
- A stable hotspot connection matters more than peak speed.
- You are diagnosing whether the problem is tied to 5G handover.
Return to automatic mode
After testing, restore the automatic/recommended setting unless the problem is repeatable. A network update or local upgrade may later change the best choice.
If the option is missing
A missing control does not automatically mean the phone lacks 5G. The operator can manage network selection, the account may not include 5G, or the software may hide manual choices. Confirm the model and plan before attempting resets.
If the phone worked on 5G previously, note when the option disappeared and whether a SIM, plan or software update occurred. That evidence is more useful to support than repeated screenshots of the signal icon.
How to verify this in everyday use
Use a temporary mode change as a diagnostic comparison, not as a permanent cure made on guesswork. Compare the same task in the same place and note stability, upload, battery use and handover. Return to the normal automatic mode unless the controlled test shows a repeatable benefit.
- Record the original network setting before changing it.
- Test a real task rather than only a speed-test peak.
- Recheck after a software or carrier-settings update.
