Choose the network mode that is consistently useful, not the one with the newest label.

Where 5G can make a visible difference

  • Large downloads, cloud backups and high-quality uploads when the local 5G cell has capacity.
  • Crowded stations, stadiums or city centres where newer network capacity is available.
  • Mobile broadband or hotspot use when the plan permits it and the signal is stable.
  • Low-latency services on compatible 5G Standalone networks, devices and plans.

Where good 4G is usually enough

Calls, messaging, maps, music streaming, social apps and standard-definition or HD video often work perfectly well on a stable 4G connection. A strong 4G signal may outperform weak or congested 5G, especially indoors or at the edge of coverage.

Compare with a repeatable test

  1. Test in the same place, at similar times and with the same phone and SIM.
  2. Run ordinary tasks first: a call, a webpage, a map and the app you rely on.
  3. Use a speed test only as supporting evidence; note download, upload, latency and stability.
  4. Try 5G Auto/Recommended before forcing 5G On, because automatic mode can protect battery life.
  5. Keep 4G selected temporarily if 5G causes repeated handovers, heat or unstable data.

Decision summary

ChooseWhen it is sensible
4GCoverage is stronger, everyday tasks are reliable, or battery life matters more than peak speed.
5G Auto/RecommendedThe phone and plan support 5G and you want the device to select it when useful.
5G OnYou are testing a known 5G area or need maximum available performance and accept higher power use.

Battery and heat need context

Weak or frequently changing radio conditions can make any phone work harder. If battery drain appears only where 5G is intermittent, compare 5G Auto with 4G for several similar days. Do not assume that 5G itself is defective if the phone is also restoring data, updating apps or running a hotspot.

A decision should be reversible: record the original network mode and restore it after the comparison.

A practical decision checkpoint

Run a controlled comparison for the tasks that matter: browsing, upload, video call or hotspot. Use the same phone, place and approximate time, and observe stability, latency and battery as well as peak download. A dependable 4G result can be preferable to an intermittent 5G connection.

  • Temporarily compare network modes only if the phone exposes the option.
  • Repeat indoors and outdoors.
  • Return to automatic mode after the test.
