A 5G-capable chipset is only the first requirement; the exact model, bands, software, SIM, network and plan must also match.

Check the exact device

  1. Open the phone’s About screen and record the model number, not only the product family.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s UK specification page for 5G bands and supported SIM configurations.
  3. Confirm that an imported or refurbished variant supports the frequencies used by the chosen UK network.
  4. Install current operating-system and carrier-settings updates.

Check the network side

  • The account includes 5G access.
  • The SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned.
  • The network supports that model and software build.
  • 5G coverage is predicted at the location.
  • Any 5G Standalone service has separate device and plan eligibility.

Look for the setting, but do not rely on it alone

On iPhone, the relevant controls are normally under Mobile Service/Mobile Data and Voice & Data. Pixel and Samsung paths vary by Android version and manufacturer. A visible 5G option is useful evidence, but the phone will show a 5G indicator only when the network, plan and local signal allow it.

Verify safely

Make an ordinary data test in a known 5G area. If 5G never appears, compare the operator’s checker, restart the phone, confirm the selected network mode and ask the operator to verify provisioning. Do not factory-reset the phone merely to make a 5G icon appear.

Refurbished and imported phones need extra care

A seller may correctly describe a handset family as “5G” while supplying a regional variant with different bands, SIM behaviour or operator certification. Ask for the model number before buying and compare it with the UK manufacturer specification.

Also check whether the phone is network-unlocked and still receives software updates. These are separate from 5G support but can matter more to long-term use.

What should be recorded before the old setup is removed

A 5G logo in a retailer listing is only the first check. Match the exact model number and regional variant to the frequencies and service profile used by the intended UK network. Then confirm the SIM, plan and software requirements, especially if 5G Standalone or Wi‑Fi Calling also matters.

  • Read the model number from the device or manufacturer record.
  • Ask the network about the exact variant rather than the product family.
  • Verify 5G with Wi‑Fi off and keep 4G fallback enabled.
