All four main UK mobile networks use VoLTE, commonly branded as 4G Calling, but device and MVNO support is not universal.

Main-network position

NetworkPublished service
EE4G Calling, with calls remaining on the EE 4G network on supported combinations
O24G Calling and, on selected combinations, 5G Calling
Vodafone4G Calling with an online compatibility check
Three4G Calling required for many devices following the 3G switch-off

MVNOs need a separate check

Using EE, O2, Vodafone or Three radio coverage does not automatically provide every host-network feature. An MVNO may support VoLTE only on particular plans, SIM versions, firmware or approved handsets.

Why a network can support VoLTE but your phone cannot use it

  • The phone is an unsupported regional variant.
  • The operator profile is absent from the software.
  • The SIM is old or incorrectly provisioned.
  • The account or plan has not enabled 4G Calling.
  • 4G coverage is unavailable at the location.
  • The phone is locked to an incompatible network or has modified firmware.

Before switching, ask the provider to confirm the exact model or use its device checker. Do not rely on the generic statement that “all 4G phones support calls over 4G”.

How to compare providers properly

Do not compare only the network logo. Ask whether the exact handset is accepted, whether 4G Calling works on PAYG as well as monthly plans, whether the SIM needs replacing, and whether VoLTE roaming is available in destinations you visit. Keep a screenshot or written support answer if voice service is critical.

Do not choose by feature name alone

Networks may label the service 4G Calling, VoLTE or combine it with 5G Calling information. What matters is whether the exact line can make and receive calls in the places you use it. Check indoor coverage, Wi‑Fi Calling and roaming support alongside the basic VoLTE answer.

Network-wide support is not device-wide approval

All major networks use 4G Calling, but an individual line still depends on the handset model, firmware, SIM, tariff and MVNO policy. Check the provider’s current support route for the exact combination.

  • Do not infer MVNO support from the host network.
  • Recheck after changing tariff or SIM.
  • Keep written confirmation when buying a phone for this requirement.
