Check the network’s device support for the exact model, then verify with an ordinary call in good 4G coverage.
1. Identify the exact device
Record the model number, not only the marketing name. Regional variants can support different bands or operator profiles. Imported devices deserve particular caution.
2. Check the network, not only the manufacturer
A specification sheet saying “VoLTE capable” does not prove support on a particular UK operator or MVNO. Use the provider’s device guide or IMEI checker and confirm the current plan.
3. Check settings and updates
- Install current operating-system and carrier updates.
- Enable 4G/LTE as the preferred network mode.
- Look for 4G Calling, VoLTE or Voice & Data settings, noting that some networks hide the switch because the feature is automatic.
- On Dual SIM, check the line that will make the call.
4. Make an ordinary test call
In an area with reliable 4G, place a normal call. If the phone stays on 4G and data remains usable, VoLTE is likely active. If it drops to 2G, loses service or cannot call, contact the provider with the model, IMEI, software version and SIM details.
If the result is unclear
Ask the operator to check the IMEI and the line’s provisioning. Describe whether calls fail completely, fall to 2G, lose data or work only through Wi‑Fi Calling. Those symptoms point to different causes. Avoid changing APN settings for a voice-only problem unless the provider gives device-specific instructions.
Check after changing network
VoLTE support does not necessarily transfer with the handset when the SIM changes. Repeat the provider compatibility check, install the new carrier settings and make a fresh ordinary call. This is particularly important with MVNOs, where access to the host network’s 4G coverage does not automatically prove access to every voice feature.
Verify the actual call path on the handset
After confirming model and provider support, place an ordinary call and observe whether the phone remains on 4G/5G and whether data continues. A 4G icon before the call is not evidence by itself.
- Update software and carrier settings first.
- Test incoming and outgoing calls.
- Ask the network to confirm account provisioning if behaviour differs.
