VoLTE, usually called 4G Calling by UK networks, lets a compatible phone make normal voice calls over 4G instead of falling back to an older network.
This matters more after the UK 3G switch-off. A phone can show 4G for data yet still fail to make calls if the exact model, software, SIM and network combination does not support 4G Calling.

The five checks that matter
- Exact phone model and regional variant.
- Current software and operator configuration.
- 4G Calling support on the network or MVNO.
- An active, correctly provisioned SIM or eSIM.
- 4G coverage where the call is made.
How to verify without guessing
Make an ordinary call in good 4G coverage and observe whether the phone remains on 4G or displays a 4G/HD calling indication. The status display is only evidence; the provider’s device checker is more authoritative.
Why an older phone can become data-only in practice
Some handsets can attach to 4G for internet access but do not have an operator-approved voice profile. Once 3G is unavailable, calls may fall to 2G where it remains, fail in 4G-only areas or behave differently while roaming.
