Use the iPhone counter to find data-hungry apps, but use the network account to confirm allowance and billing.

View usage

Open Settings > Mobile Service or Mobile Data. Scroll to see the current-period total and usage by app. The wording varies by region and iOS version.

Understand the current period

iPhone statistics do not necessarily reset on the billing date. Scroll to the bottom to see the last reset date. For a clean monthly comparison, reset statistics manually at the start of a billing cycle and record the date.

Check the details that are easy to miss

  • System Services.
  • Personal Hotspot.
  • Roaming usage.
  • Wi‑Fi Assist.
  • A second SIM or eSIM line.
  • Apps allowed to use mobile data in the background.

Reduce use without breaking essential apps

Disable mobile data only for apps that can safely wait for Wi‑Fi. Low Data Mode can reduce background activity, but messaging, navigation, authentication and accessibility tools may still need connectivity.

Resolve a discrepancy

Different reset dates and billing rules can make the iPhone total differ from the operator total. Take screenshots, confirm the billing window and contact the operator if the charged figure remains unexplained.

Dual SIM and roaming checks

On a Dual-SIM iPhone, inspect the data line used during the period and check whether Allow Mobile Data Switching was enabled. A travel eSIM may carry the data while the UK line still receives calls and SMS.

Before disputing roaming use, compare the travel dates, the selected line and the operator’s roaming record. The status bar alone may not show which line carried every session.

A safe completion check

The iPhone's Current Period is useful only if it was reset at the start of the billing cycle. Compare it with the provider account and inspect Personal Hotspot, Wi‑Fi Assist and System Services. A high app percentage shows where data went, not necessarily that the app behaved incorrectly.

  • Record the billing-cycle start date.
  • Reset statistics only after saving the current totals.
  • Use the provider figure for charges and remaining allowance.
