Stop unexpected charges first, then choose the smallest safe route: trusted Wi‑Fi, an add-on, an early renewal or a plan review.

Confirm what happened

Open the operator app or account. Check whether the allowance is exhausted, the plan failed to renew, a spend cap blocked data, roaming has a separate limit, or there is actually a network fault.

Immediate options

  • Use trusted Wi‑Fi and disable automatic joining to unknown networks.
  • Buy a one-off add-on through the official app or website.
  • Renew an eligible PAYG plan early after checking what happens to remaining allowances.
  • Temporarily enable Low Data Mode/Data Saver.
  • Download tickets, maps and authentication information while connected.

Avoid expensive or unsafe fixes

Do not buy codes from unofficial messages, remove the SIM, reset the phone or install a “free data” app. A used-up allowance is an account issue, not a handset fault.

Prevent the repeat

  1. Identify the high-use day and app.
  2. Set an operator alert and a phone warning below the allowance.
  3. Restrict video quality, hotspot and cloud backup.
  4. Compare an add-on with the next suitable plan size.
  5. Check separate roaming and tethering terms.

Keep critical access working

Before disabling mobile data completely, consider travel tickets, banking authentication, navigation and contact with family. Permit only essential apps or buy a small official add-on if being offline would create a larger risk.

If an operator offers reduced-speed access after the allowance, confirm which services remain usable and whether any charge applies.

When the change is genuinely complete

Before buying an add-on, determine whether data is exhausted, capped, throttled or blocked by a spend control. Use trusted Wi‑Fi for urgent access, then compare the one-off add-on with an early plan change. Do not remove APN settings or reset the phone when the account simply has no allowance.

  • Check the provider account and renewal date.
  • Confirm whether calls and SMS are unaffected.
  • Review which app or hotspot caused the overrun.
