Choose an allowance from measured use and a modest safety margin, not from a generic personality label such as “light” or “heavy”.
Measure a normal month
Check the operator app for at least one full billing cycle. Compare the phone’s per-app figures, but use the operator figure for billing. Include hotspot use and days away from Wi‑Fi.
Activities that change the answer
- Video quality and autoplay.
- Cloud photo/video backup over mobile data.
- Hotspot use for a laptop or tablet.
- Large app and system updates.
- Navigation with offline maps versus constant downloads.
- Travel, where a separate roaming limit may apply.
Build a sensible allowance
- Take the higher of two representative months.
- Add a buffer for travel, outages or occasional hotspot use.
- Check the cost of an add-on versus moving up one plan tier.
- Do not pay for unlimited data solely to avoid checking usage once.
- Review after two or three months rather than changing every week.
Example, not market data
If the operator shows 18 GB in a normal month and 27 GB during travel or hotspot use, a plan around the next suitable allowance above 27 GB may be more rational than either 20 GB or unlimited. Actual products and prices must be checked at the time.
Shared and secondary devices change the calculation
A tablet, smartwatch, car connection or family sharing arrangement may draw from the same account or use a separate allowance. Confirm how the provider counts each service. Hotspot use can also move laptop traffic onto the phone plan without being obvious in individual app totals.
Choose a plan that tolerates a normal high month, then use alerts before the allowance is exhausted.
A safe completion check
Base the allowance on two representative billing periods, not a generic user label. Separate ordinary phone use from hotspot, travel, cloud backup and high-quality video. Add a modest buffer, then review whether repeated add-ons cost more than the next suitable plan.

- Check roaming and tethering separately.
- Review again after changing video quality or working habits.
