How to Check Whether Your Phone Supports Wi‑Fi Calling — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

Confirm the exact model, network and plan; finding a menu on the phone is only one part of the check.

Use a four-part compatibility check

  1. Identify the exact model and regional variant in Settings or About Phone.
  2. Install current operating-system and carrier updates.
  3. Check the operator’s device guide or compatibility list for that model.
  4. Confirm that the feature is enabled on your specific account and plan.

Look for the setting

On current iPhone software, the route is commonly under Settings, Apps, Phone, Wi‑Fi Calling; on Dual SIM you may first choose a line. On Pixel it is usually within Network & Internet, SIMs and the selected SIM. Samsung may expose it in the Phone app or Connections settings. Menu names change, so use the manufacturer or operator guide for your software version.

If the option is missing

  • Restart after installing updates.
  • Check that the correct SIM or eSIM is active.
  • Ask the network whether the feature is provisioned.
  • Check whether the phone was imported or uses unsupported firmware.
  • Do not install unofficial firmware merely to expose the switch.

Verify with an ordinary call

Connect to trusted Wi‑Fi in a weak-signal area and make a normal call. Confirm the call remains clear and that incoming calls reach the same mobile number.

Check texts as well as calls

Some providers support SMS over Wi‑Fi on compatible devices, while behaviour can differ for short codes, voicemail notifications and verification messages. If the feature is important for banking or 2FA, test an ordinary incoming text and confirm the provider’s current limitations before depending on it.

Before buying or importing a phone

Ask the UK network to confirm the exact model code, not just the product family. A handset sold for another market may receive normal data yet lack the approved operator profile for Wi‑Fi Calling. Keep the seller’s compatibility statement and understand the return terms before relying on the feature for a home with poor mobile reception.

Prove support on the phone that will be used

Look for the line-specific setting after current software and carrier updates, then verify registration on trusted Wi‑Fi. If the option remains absent, distinguish unsupported hardware or firmware from an account that has not been provisioned.

  • Use the exact model number and regional variant.
  • Make an ordinary incoming and outgoing test call.
  • Do not reset the phone before the provider checks provisioning.
