eSIM Connected but No Mobile Data — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

If the eSIM shows a network name or signal but websites and apps do not load, the mobile line has registered but is not providing usable data. On a Dual-SIM phone, the most common cause is that the wrong line is selected for mobile data. Other causes include mobile data being off, an exhausted allowance, roaming settings, provider provisioning or incorrect APN information.

Confirm that the problem is mobile data

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off.
  2. Check that the eSIM still shows signal.
  3. Open a normal web page rather than relying on one app.
  4. Try an ordinary call if voice service is included.

If calls also fail or the phone shows no service, troubleshoot network registration first. This article applies when the line is connected but data does not work.

Select the correct data line

On a Dual-SIM phone, calls, messages and mobile data can use different lines.

  • On iPhone, open the mobile-service settings and select Mobile Data, then choose the intended line.
  • On a Pixel, open Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs and review the mobile-data selection.
  • On a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager and check the preferred SIM for mobile data.

Temporarily turn automatic data switching off while diagnosing the problem. Otherwise, the phone may silently move data to the other line.

Check the basic data controls

  • Make sure mobile data is on.
  • Make sure the eSIM itself is enabled.
  • Turn Flight mode on briefly, then off.
  • Restart the phone.
  • Check that Data Saver or an app-specific restriction is not blocking the test app.
  • Check that the plan has remaining data and the account is not suspended.

If you are abroad

A travel eSIM often connects through a partner network and may require data roaming to be enabled for that profile. Follow the travel provider's instructions. Do not enable data roaming on the UK line by mistake.

If the data-roaming switch is on but the service still fails:

  • confirm that the destination is included;
  • confirm that the plan has activated;
  • check whether the provider names a particular partner network;
  • restart the phone after changing networks;
  • contact the provider to confirm roaming provisioning.

Check APN settings carefully

An Access Point Name tells the phone how to reach the provider's mobile-data service. Many phones receive this automatically. Only enter or change an APN when the provider supplies exact current values for the plan.

Do not copy an APN from a forum, another network or a similarly named provider. Incorrect values can stop data, tethering or multimedia messages.

Check for provider and software updates

  • Install current operating-system updates.
  • On iPhone, open Settings > General > About and accept any provider-settings update.
  • On Android, check for a system update and restart.
  • Check the provider's service-status page for an outage.

Use a network reset only after the safe checks

Resetting mobile-network settings can help when configuration is corrupted, but the wider reset option on some phones also removes Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings or VPN settings. Record anything important first. Do not perform a factory reset for an ordinary mobile-data problem.

Information to give the provider

  • the phone model and software version;
  • the eSIM telephone number or account reference;
  • whether calls and SMS work;
  • the network name shown;
  • whether the problem occurs in more than one location;
  • whether the phone is in the UK or roaming;
  • the exact APN shown, if the provider asks for it;
  • the IMEI and EID through a private support channel.

Ask the provider to confirm that mobile data and roaming, where relevant, are provisioned on the account.

Verify the fix

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off.
  2. Open more than one website.
  3. Check that the data indicator appears beside the intended line.
  4. Review the data-usage counter to confirm which line is being charged.
  5. Turn automatic data switching back on only if you understand when it will be used.

What to confirm before the old setup is removed

A registered line with no data usually points to the selected data SIM, allowance, roaming, APN or account provisioning. Turn Wi‑Fi off, confirm the intended line is selected and try one small web request. Avoid copying APN values from a forum; use only the provider's current official settings.

  • Check whether calls and SMS still work.
  • Review spend caps and data bars in the account.
  • Record the time, place and exact error for support.
