Most eSIM failures belong to one of three stages: the profile did not install, the installed line cannot register on a network, or the line has signal but mobile data does not work. Identify the stage before changing settings.
Stage 1: the profile will not install
Typical signs include an invalid or expired QR-code message, an activation error, or no new line appearing in SIM settings.
- Confirm that the exact device and plan support eSIM.
- Use stable Wi-Fi and check date and time are automatic.
- Install any required system update.
- Check whether the QR code has already been used.
- Try the provider's supported app, manual method or direct activation if supplied.
- Contact the provider before deleting any working line.
Stage 2: the profile exists but there is no signal
Check that the line is enabled, network selection is automatic and the account is active. Look for an outage and test in another location. If abroad, verify that the plan covers the destination and that roaming is enabled only on the intended line.
Ask the provider to confirm provisioning, telephone-number assignment, IMEI or EID association, pending porting and account barring.
Stage 3: signal appears but mobile data fails
- Turn Wi-Fi off so the test is genuine.
- Confirm that this eSIM is selected for mobile data.
- Check the allowance, spend cap and account status.
- If travelling, verify data roaming and partner-network coverage.
- Use only the provider's official APN details.
- Restart once after any provider-side change.
After a software update
First check whether the line is merely disabled or hidden. On iPhone, check the eSIM section under Settings and the provider-settings version under General > About. On Android, check SIM settings for a disabled downloaded profile. Install any subsequent maintenance update before considering reactivation.
If you use more than one SIM
Temporarily disable the other line, restart and test the affected eSIM alone. Then restore the second line and recheck call and data defaults. Do not delete profiles merely to change the preferred data line.
Safe escalation information
Give the provider the exact error, when it began, the phone number, account PIN, model, software version, IMEI and EID. Do not publish these details in a forum or screenshot.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly scan the same QR code.
- Do not enter APN settings copied from an unrelated forum.
- Do not delete the profile unless a replacement is ready.
- Do not factory-reset the phone as the first response.
- Do not call 999 or 112 to test service.
Start with the stage, then choose the narrow guide
This page should route the reader: installation failure, profile present with no signal, or registered line with no data. Repeating activation steps across all three states risks consuming codes or deleting a valid profile.
- Record the stage and exact symptom.
- Preserve the old working line.
- Use the dedicated guide for the identified state.
