An MVNO sells mobile service using wholesale access to another operator’s radio network, but it controls its own tariffs, support, SIM provisioning and many service features.
The two layers
The UK’s main mobile network operators run radio networks and hold spectrum licences. A Mobile Virtual Network Operator buys access and sells service under its own brand. The host strongly influences geographic radio coverage, but the customer experience is not necessarily identical.

- Check exact 4G/5G, VoLTE, Wi‑Fi Calling and eSIM support.
- Read roaming and tethering terms.
- Check customer-support hours and complaint route.
- Confirm number porting and PAYG inactivity rules.
- Test before a long minimum term where practical.
When it may be a good choice
An MVNO can offer a useful price, short term, specialist international calling or simple PAYG service. It is less suitable when a missing feature—such as smartwatch service, a particular Wi‑Fi Calling implementation or rapid business support—is essential.
The final check that prevents the common mistake
An MVNO's radio coverage may follow a host network, but features, priorities, support, roaming and provisioning can differ. Check the exact service rather than assuming full equivalence. This matters particularly for eSIM, 4G Calling, Wi‑Fi Calling, 5G Standalone and smartwatch support.
