Activate the SIM through the provider’s official route, confirm device compatibility and APN details, then test the connection before installing the device in a hard-to-reach or critical location.
Before inserting the SIM
- Confirm the tablet, dongle, MiFi or router is unlocked and supports the network bands.
- Check the required SIM size or eSIM support.
- Record the SIM number, account login and device IMEI where relevant.
- Activate the plan as instructed.
- Find the provider’s official APN only if the device does not configure itself.
- Check whether the plan permits this device type.
Tablet setup
- Power the tablet off if the manufacturer requires it.
- Insert the SIM in the correct orientation without an empty adapter.
- Power on and wait for network registration.
- Open mobile or cellular settings and enable mobile data.
- Select the data SIM if the tablet supports multiple lines.
- Test with Wi‑Fi off.
Dongle, MiFi or router setup
- Insert the SIM and connect power.
- Open the device’s official management app or local admin page.
- Change the administrator password.
- Set the Wi‑Fi name and a strong Wi‑Fi password.
- Enter the provider APN only if automatic setup fails.
- Check signal metrics, connection status and data use.
If it registers but has no internet
Check that the plan is active and funded, the APN is correct, the SIM is allowed in that equipment and the selected network mode is automatic. Test the SIM in another compatible approved device only when this will not breach the plan terms. Do not factory-reset a router before saving its configuration.
Verify before deployment
- Run a normal webpage and a real upload.
- Restart the device once.
- Check that it reconnects automatically.
- Confirm remote or local management access.
- Set data warnings where available.
- Store the account details and recovery steps offline.
A decision test for the real-world scenario
Record the original router or tablet configuration before inserting the SIM. Activate through the provider's official route, use only the published APN and change the device administrator password. Then restart the device and prove that it reconnects without manual intervention.
- Confirm the exact SIM size and supported bands.
- Test the intended client device and VPN if needed.
- Save the working APN before any later reset.
