You can switch network before a minimum term ends, but first separate the cost of leaving the airtime service from any handset finance and compare it with the value of fixing the actual coverage problem.
Start with the switching information
Request PAC information if you want to keep the number, or STAC information if you do not. The response should include important information about the existing contract. Also open the latest bill and check the minimum-term end date, any early termination charge and any separate device balance.
Identify what is actually failing
- If coverage is poor only at home, test Wi‑Fi Calling and another network before paying to leave.
- If the problem is a temporary outage, use the status checker and obtain a case reference.
- If the tariff is unsuitable but coverage is good, ask whether an internal plan change is possible.
- If the phone is incompatible with VoLTE or eSIM, changing only the tariff may not solve it.
- If service has materially failed, follow the provider’s complaints process rather than cancelling without evidence.
Check the price terms correctly
For new contracts from 17 January 2025, any in-contract rise included in the contract must be stated upfront in pounds and pence; inflation-linked or percentage-based rise terms are not permitted in new contracts. Older contracts may use different wording. This rule does not mean every contract is fixed-price, so read the actual summary and confirmation.
Compare three routes
| Route | When it may make sense |
|---|---|
| Wait until minimum term ends | The service is usable and the exit cost outweighs the benefit. |
| Switch now and pay the stated charge | Coverage or reliability is materially more valuable than the exit cost. |
| Keep the contract but add a second SIM | A temporary or location-specific problem can be covered cheaply without losing the number. |
Protect the number and accounts
Do not cancel the old service manually if using a PAC. Save recovery codes, keep both SIMs, and avoid a port immediately before travel. After the number moves, check the final bill and any continuing handset agreement before cancelling payment arrangements.
A safe completion check
First decide whether the problem is the tariff, a temporary fault, persistent coverage or device incompatibility. Ask for the current exit figure and check whether device finance is separate. A second-network SIM can be a safer short trial than paying to leave before coverage has been proved.
- Obtain the exit amount and contract end date in writing.
- Test the alternative network where service matters.
- Keep complaint references if the issue is persistent service failure.
