Use your real pattern
- How much data did the phone use in the last two representative months?
- Is the number mainly for incoming calls or 2FA?
- Will it be used abroad?
- Is tethering required?
- Do Wi‑Fi Calling, eSIM or visual voicemail matter?
- Can the user reliably maintain PAYG activity and top-up?
Do not assume feature parity
PAYG and monthly plans on the same provider may differ in 5G, roaming, Wi‑Fi Calling, eSIM, data rollover and customer support. Check the exact tariff, not only the network logo.
Protect a low-use PAYG number
If the number is used as a backup, learn what the provider counts as qualifying activity and how often it is required. A top-up alone may not always be enough. Set a reminder and keep recovery codes for accounts tied to the number.
Check monthly price terms
For a new contract, read the minimum term, exit arrangements and any price rise stated upfront in pounds and pence. A monthly plan can be sensible without a long handset contract; SIM-only monthly and rolling options should be compared separately.
The evidence that matters more than the label
Use real usage and continuity needs. PAYG can suit light or backup use but may have inactivity rules; monthly service can offer predictable allowances but creates an ongoing commitment. Test coverage first and check how either option handles roaming, eSIM, tethering and number retention.
