PAC Code Explained: How to Get and Use One — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

A PAC moves an existing UK mobile number to a different provider; it does not unlock a phone, move an eSIM profile or cancel unrelated device finance.

When a PAC is the right code

Use a Porting Authorisation Code when you are changing provider and want the same mobile number on the new service. Use a STAC instead when you want the old service closed but do not want to keep its number. A move between tariffs on the same network may be an internal migration and may not use either code.

Request the code safely

  1. From the number being moved, text PAC to 65075, or use the old provider’s official account or contact route.
  2. Read the switching information returned with the code, including any minimum-term or balance information.
  3. Record the expiry date. PACs are normally valid for 30 days.
  4. Do not post the PAC publicly or send it to anyone except the chosen new provider.

Prepare the new service

  • Confirm that the new network covers the places that matter.
  • Check that the exact phone supports the new network’s eSIM, VoLTE and Wi‑Fi Calling requirements.
  • Activate the new SIM or eSIM if the provider instructs you to do so.
  • Save 2FA recovery codes and keep the old SIM and phone.
  • Choose a port date that avoids travel or critical account access.

Submit and verify

Give the PAC to the new provider through its official form, app or support channel. Do not manually cancel the old mobile service first: use of the PAC should close the relevant old service when the port completes. After the stated date, verify the displayed outgoing number, incoming calls from another network, SMS in both directions, mobile data and voicemail.

What a PAC does not settle

A PAC does not automatically clear a handset loan, accessory plan, insurance, family account or outstanding bill. Check the final statement before cancelling a Direct Debit. PAYG credit normally does not travel with the number. If the old account contains other numbers, confirm that only the intended line will close.

When the change is genuinely complete

Use the PAC only through the new provider's official porting route. Confirm the number attached to the code, its validity and the intended completion date before submission. A PAC moves the number; it does not automatically settle device finance, other family lines or every final charge on the old account.

  • Save the PAC and submission confirmation.
  • Do not request cancellation separately.
  • Check the final bill after the number is stable.
