Bank authentication is not universal: use only the bank’s official app and instructions, and prepare for device re-registration before removing the old phone or number.
Understand the bank’s method
A UK bank may use an app approval, biometrics, a card reader, SMS, a memorable code or a combination under Strong Customer Authentication. The available method is determined by that bank, not by a generic authenticator app.
Before moving devices
- Update the bank with the correct mobile number and address.
- Confirm you can access the email and telephone channel registered with the bank.
- Read the bank’s official new-phone or lost-phone procedure.
- Keep the old phone until the new app is activated, unless the device is stolen.
- Have the physical card or other identification the bank requires.
Never share approval codes
A fraudster may already know personal details and ask you to approve a login or payment. Do not disclose one-time codes or approve an action you did not initiate. Contact the bank using the number on the card or inside the official app.
After setup
Review payees, recent transactions, notification settings and registered devices. Report anything unfamiliar immediately through the bank’s verified channel.
Follow the bank’s device-registration process, not a generic 2FA recipe
UK banking apps can use app approval, biometrics, SMS, card readers or telephone verification in different combinations. Read the bank’s current change-of-phone instructions before removing the old app.
- Confirm the registered mobile number and postal address are current.
- Keep the old phone, physical card and any bank-issued reader available during migration.
- Install only from the official app store and verify the publisher.
- Test a harmless sign-in and review payees and recent transactions after activation.
A bank or police officer should not ask you to move money to a “safe account” or disclose a one-time code. End an unexpected call and contact the bank through a known official number.
