Apple now calls it an Apple Account: enable two-factor authentication, maintain trusted numbers and devices and verify account recovery before replacing your iPhone.
Turn it on
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Open Sign-In & Security.
- Choose Two-Factor Authentication and follow the current prompts.
- Confirm at least one trusted phone number.
Understand the factors
On a new device or browser, you normally use the Apple Account password plus a six-digit verification code from a trusted device or trusted phone number.
Before changing phones or numbers
- Add the new trusted number before removing the old one.
- Keep another trusted Apple device if possible.
- Know the Apple Account password.
- Review trusted devices and remove ones you no longer control.
- Consider an account recovery contact where suitable.
Security keys are advanced
Apple Security Keys replace the normal verification-code step for new sign-ins and require at least two compatible physical keys. They are useful for targeted-risk users but create a stricter recovery responsibility.
Build Apple Account recovery before enabling stricter security
Apple ID is now called Apple Account, although older menus and article titles may still use the previous name. Confirm trusted phone numbers and trusted devices before relying on the main iPhone as the only verification route.
- Review the Apple Account security settings from a trusted device.
- Keep at least one trusted number that remains reachable if the phone is lost.
- Understand account recovery and any recovery contact before changing devices.
- If using hardware security keys, maintain the required spare keys and test them.
After setup, use another trusted device or browser to confirm that the verification flow works. Never approve an unexpected sign-in prompt merely because it appears on an Apple device.
