Remote erase is an irreversible last step for protecting data, not the first action to take whenever a phone is temporarily missing.

Decide whether erasing is justified

  • The device is believed stolen rather than misplaced.
  • The lock screen or account may be compromised.
  • Sensitive work, banking or identity data is exposed.
  • A usable backup exists and recovery is understood.

Send the erase instruction

Use only Find My or Find Hub. Confirm the exact device before proceeding. If the phone is offline, the command may remain pending until it reconnects. Do not trust third-party “tracking” or “remote wipe” websites.

What changes afterwards

Erasing removes local data and settings. On Android, location and remote control may no longer be available after the reset. On iPhone, keep the stolen device in Find My so Activation Lock remains associated with the Apple Account.

Protect the accounts too

  1. Block or replace the SIM/eSIM with the network.
  2. Review primary email and platform account sessions.
  3. Change exposed passwords from a clean device.
  4. Contact banks and report the theft where appropriate.

Before confirming erase

  • You have selected the correct phone, not a current replacement.
  • The backup date and account recovery route are known.
  • The network has been told about the stolen SIM/eSIM.
  • Any work-device reporting requirement has been followed.

Take screenshots of the device listing and serial information before erasing if they may be needed for police, insurance or an employer.

Set an irreversible-action threshold before pressing erase

Remote wipe is appropriate when sensitive data is at serious risk and safe recovery is unlikely. It can end some tracking options, and a pending command may not run until the phone reconnects.

  • Confirm backups and account recovery are available.
  • Lock the phone, block the SIM/eSIM and protect banking and primary email first.
  • Preserve IMEI, incident details and any location evidence.
  • After an iPhone wipe, keep it in Find My so Activation Lock remains in place.

Do not use remote wipe as a routine first step for a phone possibly left nearby. Once data is erased, local unsynchronised information cannot be recovered.
