Remote locking is the preferred first response when a missing phone may still be recoverable; it restricts access without immediately destroying data.
Before sending the command
- Confirm the correct device name and last known location.
- Use a clean, trusted device to sign in.
- Prepare a safe callback number that is not the missing mobile number.
- Do not place a home address or sensitive details on the lost message.
Apple
Use Find My to mark the iPhone as lost. Lost Mode locks the device, can display a message and suspends supported payment cards. Keep the device attached to the Apple Account.
Android
Use Find Hub to secure or mark the device as lost. The command may wait until the phone reconnects. A device that is offline, powered off or unable to reach the internet cannot receive the instruction immediately.
After locking
- Notify the network if theft is possible.
- Do not approve unexpected sign-in requests.
- Ignore “phone found” messages that ask for credentials.
- Escalate to remote erase only after considering backup and recovery.
Check the command
- The service shows the device as secured, lost or pending.
- The displayed contact details are correct.
- Payment cards and sensitive notifications are restricted as expected.
- A pending command is rechecked after the phone reconnects.
A remote lock does not cancel the SIM or close the mobile account; those are separate actions with the provider.
Use the lock message to enable safe return without exposing the owner
A remote lock should display a controlled contact route, such as another number, without showing the owner’s home address, email password or sensitive medical details.
- Confirm the command status and remember it may remain pending while the phone is offline.
- Keep the tracking account secure and change its password only if compromise is suspected.
- Block payment cards and the mobile line separately where needed.
- Record the last location and time before it changes.
Do not remove the device from Find My or Find Hub after locking it. Removal can weaken theft protection or end useful tracking options.
