How to Make an Emergency Call on a Locked Phone — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

A locked phone normally provides an emergency dialler, but an actual call still requires a compatible network path and is never guaranteed.

On the lock screen

Use the Emergency or Emergency call option and dial 999 or 112 only for a genuine emergency. The emergency dialler does not normally provide general access to contacts or apps.

What the lock does not change

  • The phone still needs power.
  • A usable mobile or supported Wi-Fi-calling route must exist.
  • Network and device compatibility still matter.
  • Location information may be approximate or unavailable.

Give essential information first

  1. State which service is needed.
  2. Give the exact location or landmark.
  3. Describe the immediate danger.
  4. Follow the operator’s instructions and do not hang up unless told.

Do not test it

Check only that the emergency button is visible. Do not call 999 or 112 to confirm that the feature works.

If the phone belongs to someone else

Use only the emergency features needed to call for help or view deliberately exposed medical information. Do not attempt to access private messages, photos or accounts.

Learn the interface without completing a call

Most phones expose an Emergency option from the lock screen, but the exact gesture and displayed information vary. Practise only up to the point before dialling.

  • Confirm that the emergency keypad is reachable without the passcode.
  • Check whether Medical ID or emergency information is visible as intended.
  • Teach a trusted family member how to reach the same screen.
  • Do not assume that access to the keypad guarantees network availability.

In a real emergency, call the appropriate number and give the location immediately. Do not spend time trying to unlock the owner’s apps or accounts first.
