How to Share Your Location with Emergency Contacts — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

Use location sharing as an aid, not as a substitute for calling 999 and stating the location clearly in a genuine emergency.

Choose the right method

  • Temporary live location in a trusted messaging or map app
  • Apple Find My sharing
  • Google Maps location sharing
  • Platform emergency sharing on supported devices

Before sharing

  • Confirm the recipient is correct.
  • Choose an appropriate duration.
  • Check mobile data, Wi-Fi and battery.
  • Avoid posting a public link.

Verify delivery

Ask the contact to confirm that the location opens and updates. A stale dot, inaccurate indoor position or lost connection can mislead.

Stop sharing afterwards

Review active shares after the situation ends. Remove access from contacts or apps that no longer need it, especially after relationship or safety changes.

Location is evidence, not certainty

Indoor positioning, weak GPS, battery saving and poor data can produce a stale or broad location circle. Send a written address, landmark or route description as well when possible.

Send context as well as a map point

A live location is most useful when the recipient also knows why it was sent, the intended destination and when to escalate. A silent map link may be overlooked or misunderstood.

  • Choose a trusted service already used by both people.
  • State the route, destination or situation in a separate message.
  • Set an appropriate sharing duration and check the recipient can open it.
  • Keep a static address or coordinates available if live updates stop.

Location sharing depends on power, satellite visibility or network data. It is a supplement to an emergency call or agreed check-in plan, not a guarantee of rescue.
