How to Call 999 When You Have No Signal

What the phone may try

A compatible phone may attempt an emergency call over another available mobile network. Supported Wi-Fi Calling or satellite emergency features may provide another route on some devices and in some locations. None is guaranteed.

Improve the chance of connection

1. Move only if it is safe to do so.
2. Try an open or higher location away from heavy obstruction.
3. Keep the phone powered and disable unnecessary battery use.
4. Try another person’s phone or a landline.
5. Use a supported satellite emergency option if the phone offers it.

When connected

State the exact location first, including road, landmark, postcode, grid reference or coordinates where known. Explain that coverage is poor in case the call drops.

Do not test this advice

Never call 999 or 112 simply to see whether another network will carry the call.

Plan before remote travel

Tell someone the route and return time, carry charged backup power and download offline maps. A satellite-capable phone is useful only if the feature is available, activated and used with a clear view of the sky.

Move from “no normal service” to the best available real connection

A phone may be able to use another available network for an emergency call, but this is not guaranteed. Wi-Fi Calling, satellite features and emergency roaming depend on the device, configuration, location and service availability.

• Move to a safer open or higher location only when doing so does not increase danger.
• Try another phone or a landline if immediately available.
• State the exact location, landmark or coordinates first when connected.
• Preserve battery and keep the line free for a callback.

Never make a test call to 999 or 112. Check menus, demo modes and official instructions in advance, and keep an offline plan for places where no connection is likely.
