How to Back Up to iCloud

Create the backup

1. Open Settings and tap your name.
2. Tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
3. Turn on Back Up This iPhone or iPad.
4. For an immediate copy, tap Back Up Now.
5. Keep the device connected until the backup completes.

Automatic backup conditions

Automatic iCloud Backup normally runs when the device is connected to power, locked and on a suitable network. If storage is full or the account is signed out, a new backup may not complete.

Understand synced data

Data already synchronised through services such as iCloud Photos, Contacts or Notes is managed separately and may not be duplicated inside the device backup. A deletion can synchronise, so consider an independent archive for irreplaceable material.

Before relying on it

• Check the backup date.
• Confirm the correct Apple Account.
• Review storage warnings.
• Keep access to the trusted number and another trusted device.
• Do not erase the source until the restore has been verified.

Check which iCloud feature protects each category

iCloud Backup and iCloud synchronisation are not the same mechanism. Photos, contacts, notes and messages may sync separately, while the device backup contains settings and other eligible data not already stored in iCloud.

• Review the latest iCloud Backup date and any storage warning.
• Open recent synced items on another trusted device where practical.
• Check whether important apps use their own cloud account or export process.
• Keep Apple Account recovery and a trusted number independent of the phone being backed up.

Before deleting content to free space, understand whether deletion will sync across devices. A visible cloud thumbnail is not always an independent historical copy.
