How to Back Up a Phone to a Computer

iPhone

Use Finder on a current Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows. Select the iPhone and create a backup. Enable encrypted local backup when you need protected categories such as saved passwords and Health data.

Android

Connect by USB, unlock the phone and choose file transfer when prompted. Copy irreplaceable folders such as DCIM, Pictures, Movies, Documents, Download and recordings. This is a file archive, not a complete restorable image of every app.

Protect the computer copy

• Use an encrypted computer account or encrypted drive.
• Keep enough free disk space.
• Store the iPhone backup password safely.
• Consider a second copy on an external drive.
• Disconnect the phone cleanly after copying.

Verify

Open several copied files from the computer and check the backup date. Do not delete the phone’s originals immediately after one untested copy.

Make the computer copy recoverable, not merely present

A local backup is valuable only if the computer, backup password and required restore software will still be available when the phone fails. Treat those dependencies as part of the backup.

• Use Finder or Apple Devices for an iPhone and the manufacturer or documented file-copy route for Android.
• Enable encryption when needed for protected categories and store the encryption password separately.
• Check the backup date, device name and storage location after completion.
• Protect the computer itself with disk encryption and another backup if the phone data is important.

Before erasing the phone, open several copied files or inspect the backup with the official tool. If possible, test the restore process on a spare compatible device rather than discovering missing prerequisites during an emergency.
